• It is importnat that stuents and families practice English and literacy skills in the home. Any of the activity links are good practice for children before entering school to adults that are still leraning the language.

Tips for language practice at home:

    1. Picture books- children and parents can describe what is happening in the pictures in English or their home language- this builds vocabulary essential for participating in school. It is easier to learn a word in English that you already know in your first language.
    2. Read books in English or in your home language. Literacy skills transfer from language to language, what changes is the vocabulary and sentence structure.
    3. Sing songs and say rhymes in English or the home language. This helps students learn how the language is supposed to sound and increases literacy in any language.
    4. Go to the public library. You can check out books, movies, TV shows, etc. for free. You need to show proof of where you live and a valid ID to obtain a card from your local library. Books can usually be checked out for 3 weeks and if returned on time, there are no fees.
    5. Talk to your children. The more opportunities you have to speak to your children the greater their vocabulary will be. This helps them when they are learning new vocabulary in English.
